How We Met

It started at UW-Madison in 2013. Liz and Drew both gravitated toward science and found their way into a welcome meeting for the Alpha Chi Sigma chemistry fraternity, where they met each other and a few others who would later become close friends. Right off the bat they formed a team that dominated the whole rush process, so that was probably a good sign for things to come. Now it took a while before they actually started dating, because Drew can be slow sometimes, but eventually he Wies'd up and made a move. They started dating on December 10th, 2016, and when it became Facebook official about a month later, really the biggest relationship hurdle was out of the way. It's totally definitely been smooth sailing 100% of the time from then on, and they now live together happily in Madison. But actually, life's been treating them well and they're excited to keep growing and traveling together for many years to come.

The Proposal

Drew likes to do things over the top sometimes, but this is probably one of the few cases where it was actually warranted. He came up with a plan, pored over the details for like at least a solid hour, and navigated several "hey so are ya gonna propose there wink-wink-nudge-nudge?" conversations without spilling the beans. The big day came during a trip to Hawai'i. After completing a curcuit around the Big Island for the first half of the trip, there were a total of six scuba dives scheduled, and he made his move during the second. At the end of the dive and during a 3-minute safety stop 15 feet below the surface, Drew made an elaborate series of hand gestures to communicate his proposal to Liz. Unfortunately Liz had no idea what he was doing, but luckily pulling out a ring and pointing to her ring finger was enough to get the point across. Liz was so excited she immediately shot up to the surface, making for a slightly awkward time as Drew took safety very seriously for another couple minutes and completed his stop. The two reunited at the surface and Liz eagerly accepted, now that she could actually speak.
